As per Bylaw 2.4.2, the AZMD shall assist the ZMD fulfilling his/her duties. Without limiting the authority of AHS relative to it's administrative stuctures, the responsilibilities of the AZMD include, but are not limited to:

  • The AZMD is the senior physician leader for his/her North Zone Area. He/she will perform all duties assigned to him/her by AHS’ Bylaws and the Rules;
  • Jointly responsibility/accountability for overall Medical Affairs and Clinical Operations Area healthcare delivery with the AZMD’s North Zone Clinical Operations Area Dyad partner;
  • Effective and Consistent Communication to support front line practitioner engagement;
  • Attending key ZMD meetings;
  • Advocating for the provision of high quality and safe patient care in a Rural Hospital/Community;
  • North Zone Physician workforce planning and health service planning;
  • Ensuring compliance of front line practitioners with AHS MSBs/MSRs;
  • Liaising with Health Advisory Council (HAC) members, external stakeholders and Community members with the AZMD’s SOO/SOD dyad partner;
  • Rural Hospital/Community capital project planning and development needs;
  • Providing front line physician leaders with at least annual formal feedback, in writing and through a conversation, in order to support leadership development;
  • Ensuring the timely provision of feedback for frontline physicians in the AZMD’s Area, and serving as an arbitrator for disputes involving the AZMD’s frontline physicians;
  • Leading Triggered Initial Assessments/Reviews as requested by the ZMD in external Areas consistent with AHS’ MSBs;
  • Coordinating and supervising the patient concern and critical incident process within his/her Area(s);
  • Participating in NZ physician leadership development. At a minimum, an AZMD commits to attending two annual physician leadership development events (like PLI courses approved by NZMA and fully funded by AHS);
  • Recording ongoing demonstrative/written evidence of work product consistent with the position’s full FTE calculated weekly for financial audit/general accounting purposes regarding an independent contractor;
  • Ensuring that Locum Physician Evaluations are completed by the AZMD’s appropriate CMD/local physician as required;
  • Regularly and equitably participating in the North Zone Senior Physician Leader after-hours on-call call schedule;
  • Performing all duties as may be designated or delegated by the ZMD or designate.

The candidate must be eligible for Licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta. Preference will be given to those residing in the North Zone.

Compensation will be determined by the AHS Physician Leader Compensation Grid and will commensurate with the responsibilities of the position, the time require to fulfill these responsibilities, and the skills/experience of the successful applicant.
