Position Summary:

The contractor shall provide medical leadership services in the Calgary Zone in support of the Elbow River Healing Lodge (ERHL). This is a 0.2 FTE position.

This position reports dually to the Medical Leader, Community Health, Calgary zone and to the Medical Director of the Indigenous Provincial Program. This position works together closely with the ERHL clinic manager and will be expected to develop and maintain a collaborative working environment in line with the AHS dyad model of leadership.


In a competent and professional manner, the Contractor will:

1. Provide effective medical oversight of the ERHL clinic. This includes but is not limited to:

a) Ensuring patient care is provided to clients aligned to primary care best practice, with a culturally safe, trauma-informed lens that promotes indigenous health and incorporates indigenous ways of healing;

b) Advising on and modelling progress towards Truth and Reconciliation recommendations on health;

c) Working in a dyad relationship with the clinic manager to develop clinic guidelines and roles and responsibilities for physicians and staff at ERHL;

d) Recruit and manage medical staff at ERHL, in alignment with the governance and processes of the Aboriginal Alternative Relationship Plan and AHS Medical Affairs policies;

e) Provide support and advice to the operational dyad when requested on cultural safety, indigenous perspectives, and truth and reconciliation guidelines when hiring and appraising ERHL staff;

f) Lead regular physician meetings, at a minimum of quarterly, and summarize action items and ensure follow-up of those items;

g) Manage physician performance issues and support standardization as appropriate to support client priorities and needs.

h) In collaboration with the clinic manager, support a program of clinic orientation and continuing education for staff and physicians with an emphasis on cultural competence;

i) Develop and maintain effective and progressive working relationships with other clinical services at the Sheldon Chumir Health Centre as well as other relevant stakeholders in the Calgary Zone

j) Participate in continuous quality improvement at ERHL

2. Provide Community outreach, including:

a) Developing and maintaining a relationship with local Primary Care Networks (PCNs) leadership that enables access for ERHL clients to services not otherwise available at the clinic

b) Providing expertise as needed to PCNs and external partners working with ERHL on cultural competence

c) Working with the University of Calgary and other relevant academic institutions to support quality learning opportunities for medical and staff learners at ERHL

d) Work with other indigenous programs and services, including schools, First Nations health clinics, indigenous social support services and others as appropriate to champion integrated and aligned care for the Calgary zone indigenous population

3. Contribute to the larger Indigenous Health Program, including:

a) Participate as a member of the provincial indigenous hub

b) Support where possible indigenous health and primary care related research

Fee for Service

The Practitioner is responsible for purchasing health and insurance benefits.
