The Medical Director, East Calgary Family Care Centre is a vital role in the Calgary Zone with accountabilities to the Medical Leader Primary Care and Medical Leader Community Health, Calgary Zone. This position works within a dyad model with the Manager of the East Calgary Family Care Centre (ECFCC) to oversee the service delivery, quality assurance and improvement, and medical affairs responsibilities of the clinic. The successful candidate will also maintain an active panel of patients as a clinician at the site.

Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Physician workforce management and oversight including:

o Physician recruitment and retention

o Ensuring quality care in compliance with Alberta Health Services Medical Staff bylaws and the College of Physician and Surgeons of Alberta standards and policies

o Oversee the administrative medical affairs requirements including periodic reviews, workforce planning and AIVA submissions

o Responding to patient related concerns

o Promoting leadership development among physicians and allied health members in collaboration with the Clinical Manager

o Supporting education of medical learners ECFCC

Building strong internal and external relationships with important stakeholders:

o Liaising and collaborating with Primary Care Networks (PCNs) in the Calgary Zone including Mosaic PCN locally and the Calgary Zone PCN committee.

o Liaising and collaborating with acute care partners including the Peter Lougheed Centre as a significant partner and stakeholder

o Liaising and collaborating with Community partners in the local geographic area to support comprehensive care and a healthy Medical neighborhood.

Collaboration with the Clinical Manager of ECFCC to jointly:

o Manage conflict resolution at the site

o Provide clinical leadership to Nurse Practitioners and other Allied Health staff where appropriate

o Maintain high quality and effective communication strategies for staff, physicians, and clients

o Develop quality improvement initiatives related to excellence in primary care delivery, with a focus on high needs clients

o Provide appropriate reporting on clinical activities at the site


This position reports to the Medical Leader for Primary Care, Calgary Zone in the Community Health portfolio and works within the Department of Family Medicine, Calgary Zone.

The successful candidate will have a license to practice Family Medicine in good standing with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta, and will have significant experience in primary care leadership and clinical service delivery. An active Medical Staff Appointment with Alberta Health Services will be a requirement. Preference will be given to candidates with a demonstrated interest and expertise in the management of complex primary care patients and expert level skills in relationship building and communication.
