Alberta Health Services is inviting applications from Generalist Obstetrician Gynecologists to join the Department of Women’s Health in the Edmonton Zone.

This position will be based out of the Sturgeon Community Hospital (SCH). Located in St. Albert, just north of Edmonton, the SCH provides a wide variety of health services to the community of St. Albert and surrounding area. St. Albert was named the best city in Canada in which to live by Money Sense magazine and recently SCH was designated an A+ hospital in a national review done by CBC’s Fifth Estate. As a community hospital, the Sturgeon's focus is on providing the best care in a comfortable, modern and friendly setting. Care provided includes Emergency Services, General Surgery, Orthopedic Surgery, and Medicine, Women's Health, Diagnostic Imaging, Laboratory services, Cardiac and Intensive care units. The SCH has recently opened a Level 2 NICU to provide improved neonatal care in concert with our obstetrical services. Twenty seven hundred deliveries are performed on site each year and the site supports this being increased within the current bed base.

The position will help to support and augment the already strong obstetrics program and minimally invasive gynecology programs at the hospital. The hospital has led the region in advancement of minimally invasive gynecology and we see this as an opportunity to further support that progress. The new recruit would be expected to possess minimally invasive gynecology skills and have a desire to advance those further. Remuneration will be on a fee-for-service basis through billings submitted by the physician to Alberta Health.

The Sturgeon Community Hospital is affiliated with the University of Alberta, and serves as an important training hospital for residents and medical students. Therefore, the successful candidate will be expected to apply for a Clinical Academic appointment in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, at the University of Alberta located in Edmonton. This will be considered under a separate process through the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry which has been internationally recognized as among the world’s top 50 medical schools and as one of Canada’s premier health-education institutions.

Located 20 minutes away from Edmonton's core, St Albert boasts mature tree lined streets, a bustling downtown district, low unemployment rates and low crime rates. There are excellent schools, parks and trails, and wonderful outdoor and indoor recreational facilities located within the Saint Albert area. It also boasts an impressive roster of festival and events, including a large outdoor farmers market which is western Canada's largest outdoor market.

The Sturgeon Community Hospital in Saint Albert is an innovative facility, delivering Primary Health care and community based services and a 24 hour Emergency department that sees over 50,000 patients per year. The Sturgeon Community Hospital offers emergency services, critical care and cardiac intensive care units, a day surgery clinic, adult day support programs and a large labour and delivery unit. Services on site include Orthopedics, GIM, Cardiology, Intensivists, General surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, GI services, Psychiatry, ID and Rheumatology. This is a large facility offering physicians an opportunity to work with multidisciplinary teams that are focused on improving patient health outcomes.

The successful candidate must have or be eligible to become a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCPC) in Obstetrics and Gynecology. The candidate must have or be eligible for unrestricted licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta.

Remuneration is Fee for Service.

The position will remain open until a suitable candidate is found. Interested persons who meet the above qualifications should forward their curriculum vitae and three reference letters to:
