Alberta Health Services Edmonton Zone Department of Critical Care Medicine, in partnership with the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta, invites applications for a position of Adult Intensivist at the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU). The position is based at the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute in Edmonton. It is aligned with a Clinical Faculty position within the Critical Care Department at the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry.

The Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute is a world leader in complex cardiac care and surgery with a team of world class cardiologists, cardiovascular surgeons, cardiac critical care intensivists, cardiac anesthetists, researchers and educators advancing the science, prevention, detection and treatment of cardiovascular disease.

The University of Alberta Hospital is one of Canada’s leading clinical, research and teaching hospitals, treating more than 700,000 patients annually from across western and northern Canada. The hospital offers a wide range of specialized services in cardiac sciences, neurosciences, surgery, medicine, critical care, emergency and trauma care. The University of Alberta has been ranked amongst the top 100 teaching and research universities in the world serving over 38,000 students with more than 15,000 faculty and staff. The University has an annual budget in excess of $1.7 billion and attracts significant external funding. The Department of Critical Care Medicine at the University of Alberta is a growing research-focused Department, consisting of 12 primarily appointed and over 50 Clinical Faculty members.

The CVICU is a 24-bed unit that is currently staffed by 8 critical care specialists certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Base specialties include Internal Medicine, Pulmonary, Cardiology, Anesthesia and Cardiovascular Surgery. There are approximately 1600 admissions to the CVICU annually. The unit has a fully integrated program in Mechanical Circulatory Support and Extra Corporeal Membrane Oxygenation for cardiac as well as respiratory failure. It serves the second largest heart and lung transplant program in Canada. In addition, it supports the largest adult congenital cardiac surgical program in western Canada. The unit has an expanding academic and educational mandate, and provides a specialized one-year fellowship program in cardiac surgical critical care that is recognized nationally and internationally.

The successful candidate will be certified by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada with an MD, FRCPC or FRCSC, possess a specialist certificate in Critical Care Medicine, and be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA).

Individuals dedicated to the highest standard of care of complex and high risk cardiac surgical patients are encouraged to apply. Clinical experience or advanced training or fellowship in cardiac surgical critical care is desirable. Participation and leadership in extra clinical work in alignment with the Department of Critical Care academic mission is expected, particularly in the areas of health research, quality improvement, clinical ethics and medical education.

Remuneration is currently based on Fee for Service and an honorary stipend from the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry. The position consists of eight clinical weeks and four partial weeks a year in accordance with the current clinical coverage model in the unit.

Start date is July 2022, but is negotiable.
