Geriatric Psychiatrists | Villa Caritas

(20-VC-PSY-GER-05 | 20-VC-PSY-GER-16 | 20-VC-PSY-GER-17)

Covenant Health, in partnership with Alberta Health Services and the University of Alberta, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, Department of Psychiatry, is accepting applications for three Geriatric Psychiatrist positions at Villa Caritas in Edmonton, Alberta.

Covenant is Canada’s largest Catholic provider of health care, with 26 Catholic facilities in 15 communities across Alberta. As a major provider in Alberta’s integrated health system, the Covenant family (Covenant Health, Covenant Care, and Covenant Living) works with Alberta Health Services and community partners to positively influence the health of Albertans through a broad range of programs and services in our hospitals, health centres and continuing care centres.

Villa Caritas is a 150-bed acute mental health facility that specializes in caring for seniors with complex mental and medical health issues. Villa Caritas provides appropriate, timely intervention and care for seniors with a focus on treating their conditions and transferring them back home or to an appropriate care setting. Villa Caritas is associated with Covenant Health's Community Geriatric Psychiatry Program, which provides follow up and support to seniors with mental illness living in the community.

In collaboration with their colleagues, the successful candidates will deliver a combination of in-patient and out-patient work, and will participate in the program’s in-patient on-call schedule and vacation coverage.

Service to out-patients will be provided through community geriatric psychiatry. There would also be an opportunity to work with the Continuing Care Psychiatry Consultation Service, which provides geriatric psychiatry consultation to patients residing in continuing care. There may be future opportunity to participate in telepsychiatry and provide Rural Clinic consulting services. Remuneration is based on a fee-for service basis.

The successful candidates must have or be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta. Preferred candidates will have geriatric psychiatry background and must have specialist qualifications, FRCPC in Psychiatry or equivalent. Priority will be given to candidates with subspecialty training and certification in Geriatric Psychiatry.

The successful applicants will be required to participate in the teaching program and will be expected to apply for a Clinical Faculty Appointment in the Department of Psychiatry, University of Alberta, which will be considered under a separate process through the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry. An interest in participating in various hospital committees, sharing in some hospital administrative duties, and participating in departmental grand rounds is also an expectation.

These positions will not support a practice readiness assessment.
