Alberta Health Services (AHS), Edmonton Zone, invites applications for the role of Medical Director, Human Organ Procurement and Exchange (HOPE), Edmonton Zone.

This 0.2 FTE position, governed by the Medical Staff Bylaws and Rules, reports through the Associate Zone Medical Director (AZMD) to the Edmonton Zone Medical Director (EZMD).

The Medical Director, HOPE is responsible for providing leadership, direction and site coordination for the Human Organ Procurement and Exchange (HOPE) Program in the Edmonton Zone, primarily located at the University of Alberta Hospital. The Medical Director, HOPE will act as a physician donation champion in the catchment areas of the HOPE Program and the Comprehensive Tissue Centre for both in hospital activities and public awareness; and advocate for organ donation: this may include education, presentations and representation of the HOPE Program at a committee level.

A Medical Director is a member of the medical administrative structure for the Edmonton Zone.

The Medical Director, HOPE is a Senior Medical Leadership role in the Edmonton Zone responsible for the regulatory compliance of organ procurement, provide medical advice and support for the HOPE Coordinators and physicians involved in donor identification, donor assessment, donor management and other issues associated with the procurement process, providing leadership support, contributing expert guidance and advice, and conducting rigorous performance management and quality improvement. Other major accountabilities include:

  • Quality Management - ensure the ongoing monitoring of quality clinical/medical practice across sites and ensure effective processes are in place to encourage best practice and improve clinical outcomes;
  • Academic Liaison – ensures effective support at the site level for teaching and research where appropriate;
  • Resource Management – support recruitment;
  • Performance Management – support the performance monitoring of medical staff.

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated abilities in communication, conflict resolution and a passion for quality and patient safety. S/he will be an inclusive and visionary leader with significant experience in medical leadership and is considered a strong clinician by peers.

The successful candidate will possess superior interpersonal skills, have demonstrated supervisory experience and be an excellent clinician with the respect of his/her peers.

Candidates must possess a Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (FRCPSC) fellowship, or equivalent designation, be eligible to work in Canada, and hold or be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta and appointment to the AHS Medical Staff. Candidates should have evidence of formal administrative education and training.

Remuneration is in accordance with AHS contractor agreements.
