We are looking for a physician with training in Family Medicine who will practice in a office based Family Medicine clinic and local health facilities. This position requires a scope of practice that includes outpatient, acute, long term care, basic obstetrics, and Ambulatory Care on-call coverage. Candidates require recent and relevant experience in all scopes of practice to be performed. A successful candidate will be responsible for after hours inpatient care.

This position requires a successful candidate to join a obstetrical on-call group and support obstetrical delivery.

As of 2015, the town has two medical clinics with a total of 12 doctors. Sylvan Lake is one of nine identified communities in Alberta to construct a Family Care Centre (FCC) in order to service local area healthcare needs. In May of 2014, the Urgent Care Committee began extensive work on the required business plan. Core medical services that the committee has lobbied for includes:

  • medical assistance for non-life threating injuries
  • extended hours from 7:00am – 10:00pm, seven days a week in one consistent location
  • access to Lab and X-Ray
  • observation Beds
  • staffed by Doctors, nurses, and other appropriate health professionals

Deliveries: 2500 p/yr

Available Specialty Services (full-time and part-time):
Orthopaedic Surgeon provides and has a pre-op clinic, full day of surgery and post op clinic every second week.

A full time General Surgeon is on site that provides services including appendectomy, colonoscopy and endoscopy procedures.

Radiology Services:
Diagnostic Imaging
Computerized Tomography (CT) Scan
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

Laboratory Hours of Operation: 24 hrs

Kidney Dialysis Unit on Site: Yes

Cancer Treatment Services Available on Site: Yes

Candidates must hold a valid and relevant license with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta

Required Competencies

  • Recent experience (within the last 12 months) of independent Family Medicine practice where the physician has been the Most Responsible Physician for a wide range of Family Medicine patients.
  • Previous basic obstetrics and emergency room experience
  • Applicant must also be able to provide proof of participation in relevant Continuing Medical Education (CME) programs.


  • Certificate of the College of Family Physicians
  • Experience within the past 24 months running an office based family medicine clinic and being responsible for after hours inpatient care.
  • Paediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
  • Advanced cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)
  • MOREOB/Advances in Labour and Risk Management
  • Neonatal Resuscitation (NRP)
  • Certificate of the College of Family Physicians (CCFP)

This position is compensated as Fee For Service

A Flat Fee is paid to physicians who practice & reside in this community of $4100.00 per year provided his/her annual income for insured services is greater than $50,000. (Residency conditions apply, including living in the eligible community for nine of the previous twelve months ending on the payment date.) The Variable Fee Premium paid is an additional 0.00% for insured services provided in this community.

Rural, Remote, Northern Program (RRNP) - Please note, payments through the RRNP are capped at $60,000 per physician per year.

Medical Liability Reimbursement - reimburses physicians for their medical liability protection costs less a $1,000 deductible.

Continuing Medical Education - reimburses physicians for eligible continuing medical education costs. Each eligible physician receives a $2,500 annual allotment which can be carried forward for up to three years.

Parental Leave Program - provides $1,000 per week for up to 17 weeks to physician parents of a newborn or newly adopted child.

Business Cost Program - addresses escalating practice costs in community based practices. This fee modifier is added automatically to select office visits and consultations. This program applies across the province and all physicians who provide visit services in an office based setting will receive an additional $2.75 with the exception of Calgary and Airdrie where the fee modifier is $3.25 on select office visits and consultations.
