Are you a physician passionate about the health and wellbeing of the community with training in public health? If so, Alberta Health Services’ has an opportunity for a Medical Officer of Health (MOH) lead for the Emergency/Disaster Management (E/DM) provincial program that could be right for you.
Joining a cohesive, integrated and well-coordinated team, you will have the opportunity to strategize, deliver, and advance public and population health within the E/DM program. In this 0.3 FTE position, you will be concentrated in clinical expertise in emergency and disaster management planning and response while leveraging already established relationships.
Specifically, the Provincial Lead partners with local authorities including emergency service providers (police, fire, emergency responders), provincial authorities (government, AEMA), community partners (NGOs, schools boards, social service organization, essential service industry, private industry) in the area of emergency management. As well, the Provincial Lead provides emergency planning and preparedness including coordinating emergency plans, contingencies for major events (e.g., natural disasters, disease outbreaks, mass casualties, labour disruption), and pandemic planning.
The successful candidate will be a member of the Provincial Population and Public Health (PPPH) portfolio reporting directly to the Senior Medical Director and Senior Program Officer of PPPH.
Under the Public Health Act, the MOH has statutory responsibilities related to investigation and control of communicable diseases, infection prevention and control and environmental threats to the health of the population. Additional experience in the areas of leadership, financial management, planning and program development is an asset.
Provide public health leadership and expertise as a Public Health Consultant.
Build integrated teams within PPPH, but also internal and external teams.
Provides advice, guidance and expertise in planning for, and the management of CBRN risks and incidents.
Develop and lead strategic initiatives applicable to population and public health matters.
Work with E/DM Business Continuity Management, Zone Leadership and Zone MOHs to support community based strategies that reduce risks associated with actual or potential emergencies / disasters.
Provide public health expertise and guidance to AHS Emergency Disaster Management and AHS MOHs as required.
Provide high-level support, guidance and leadership in response to, and recovery from, actual event(s) as appropriate to the nature of the event(s).
Liaise with external partners such as municipalities, councils, and schools.
Serve as the provincial spokesperson on provincial content issues.
Participate in the production of technical or synthesis documents on

Contribute to E/DM related education and awareness.
