The Provincial Department of Correctional Health is recruiting Psychiatrists in North Zone, Central Zone and South Zone at the Correctional facilities. There is ongoing recruitment underway.

Roles & Responsibilities:

  1. Provide psychiatric assessment, diagnosis and treatment to incarcerated individuals in the correctional facility in compliance with the standards, guidelines and requirements of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta, the Canadian Psychiatric Association, AHS Medical Staff Bylaws and AHS Medical Staff rules.
  2. Deliver services during Clinics scheduled at mutually agreeable time with the correctional facility’s Health Services Manager.
  3. Liaise with the Director of AHS Corrections Health Services Manager and the AHS Facilities Medical Director for Correctional Health Services in regard to planning for absences. The psychiatrist is responsible for finding psychiatric coverage during their absence.
  4. Respond to phone calls from the correctional facility regarding psychiatric patients from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday to Friday, excluding statutory holidays.
  5. Remain fully informed on the developments concerning the psychiatric condition of acutely ill patients in cooperation with all other health care providers.
  6. Prescribe medications in compliance with the AHS correctional formulary to patients in the correctional facility.
  7. Identify opportunities for policy and practice improvements through participation in Quality Assurance Reviews, accreditation and quality improvement opportunities.
  8. Promote good health practices for incarcerated individuals.
  9. As agreed upon, may be required to provide virtual telehealth services to various correctional health sites.

The successful candidate will have an MD and must be eligible for certification with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Psychiatry, for licensure in the province of Alberta.

Required to provide a recent (within 90 days) Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) (Criminal Record Check) clearance, vulnerable sector security check, and participate in a correctional centre security orientation.
